We only have one planet, and most of us have realised the importance of protecting it for today and future generations.
Safeguarding the Earth’s health is very much front of mind during March, which has been dedicated as B Corp month. This is a time to recognise and celebrate companies that take their social and environmental responsibility and impact seriously.
Businesses can be powerful forces for good by adopting and promoting sustainable and planet-friendly practices. However, the sad truth is that many people talk the talk but don’t really walk the walk. Climate change is a problem that’s not going away anytime soon and requires all of us to play our part.
In September last year, NuServe was honoured to be one of the first office cleaning businesses in the UK to become a Certified B Corp, joining three other cleaning companies across the globe. It was a thrilling moment and coveted recognition for being a planet-conscious company that meets stringent social and environmental standards. As we celebrate B Corp month, we thought this was a good time to discuss the many ways we’re putting the planet first.
Eeo-friendly cleaning products
At NuServe, we give preference to non-chemical cleaning agents that hold Cradle to Cradle, EU Ecolabel, Nordic Swan Ecolabel, Ecologo or other relevant environmental accreditation. We will only use non-preferred products when alternatives cannot be found. Our aim is to reduce our spending on non-preferred products each year by 10% or more.
Friendly packaging
We are committed to eliminating single-use plastic by the end of 2022. We will favour cleaning products and supplies with biodegradable, recycled or recyclable packaging.
Office supplies
Our goal is to only use recycled office paper from FSC certified sources. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified ensures products such as paper and wood come from responsibly managed forests.
Paper consumables
Any bamboo/wood used in the manufacture of paper towels and tissues we purchase must come from sources certified by the FSC/PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). Where possible, preference is given to fast-growing alternative sources such as bamboo. Additionally, we favour manufacturers whose facilities use renewable energy and surface water.
Hair and bodycare products
Shampoos, soaps and lotions given to clients will be cruelty-free and ecologically sound. We also use our influence to encourage our customers to purchase natural products.
Cleaning and electrical equipment
When purchasing new equipment, preference will be given to manufacturers that adhere to the circular economy. This is an economic system aimed at continually using resources and eliminating waste.
Uniforms
Once current T-shirts have reached the end of their lives, we will replace them with T-shirts produced from sustainably farmed organic cotton or recycled plastic.
Energy
Our buildings will continue to be fuelled by 100% renewable energy.
Final thoughts
Being recognised as a B Corp is not the endpoint for NuServe. We still have a lot of work to do to achieve our long-term sustainability goals. We are excited about this challenge as we strive to fulfil our vision of adhering to practices that leave no trace on the environment.
