How many of your employees are on the hustle?

Have you got a side hustle? Do you even know what it is?

A side hustle is a project that you undertake outside of your day-to-day job. You might be writing a novel, practicing your photography skills or plying your trade as a part-time freelancer. a side hustle isn’t a second job you do for another employer, it’s a business or a hobby that you run and control. It can be to earn a little money, learn new skills of fulfil your creative yearnings.

In this article, we’re not talking about having a part-time job or working in the gig economy in the evenings or weekends. This is more about fulfilling your passion. When you set up a side hustle, you are the master of its destiny, nobody else. It’s yours and yours alone.

Side hustles are on the increase

According to Henley Business School, as many as one in four people in the UK are running at least one business project alongside their day job, and a recent Deloitte survey of millennial and Gen Z workers shows that nearly two-thirds of respondents would consider a side hustle to supplement their full-time employment.

Should employers be worried?

How would you feel about your staff running their own businesses on the side? As long as your employees dedicate their full attention to their job whilst at work and their side hustle doesn’t conflict or interfere with their role at your company, then running a side hustle should be seen as a sign of good initiative and drive by employers.

It’s understandable that some employers may fear abuse of the system or even losing staff if their side hustle takes off, but you may have no choice. The side hustle is gaining popularity, so change your perspective and start to see them for all the good things they will bring to your team and ultimately your business. If you really think about it, by side hustling, your employees are:

  • Upskilling themselves, and bringing these new skills back to the office, where others can benefit.
  • Building their confidence and resilience by being their own boss and pushing themselves outside of their comfort zone.
  • Forming a better understanding of who they are and how they work, enabling them to bring their whole selves to work, and do that work in a way that suits them best – which can only be a good thing.
  • Gaining experience of new environments, new industries and new ways of doing things, meaning they are far more likely to bring this level of open-mindedness and big-picture thinking back to their day job.
  • Constantly solving problems and taking risks independently and translating this approach to help drive creative thinking and innovation in your own business.

So if you discover that your staff are on the hustle, be glad that you have hired people with the initiative, imagination and drive to do something new that they love.
