New Living Wage rate announced for Living Wage Week

A new Living Wage of £9.30 in the UK and £10.75 in London has been announced this morning to coincide with Living Wage Week.

The Living Wage campaign, not to be confused with the government's minimum wage (that was re-branded to the Nation Living Wage, and is considerably lower), is an independent movement of businesses, organisations and people who believe a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.

Employers choose to pay the real Living Wage on a voluntary basis and NuServe are proud to be a Living Wager Recognised Service Provider, which means that all of our directly employed staff are paid at least the Living Wage, and we always provide a quote and encourage our customers to do the same.

The campaign for a Living Wage was launched by members of London Citizens in 2001. Parents in East London found that despite working two, or more, minimum wage jobs they were struggling to make ends meet and were left with no time for community and family life. It enjoys cross-party support, with public backing from successive Metropolitan Mayors and MPs across the UK, including First Ministers in Wales and Scotland.

The benefits of paying a higher wage

Opting to pay a Living Wage will lead to higher salary costs but, by further professionalising the cleaning sector and driving new innovations, technologies and productivities, we believe that not only will cleaners benefit from fairer wages but clients will too.

  • 64% of businesses say the Living Wage has helped to differentiate themselves from others in their industry
  • 75% of businesses say the Living Wage has increased motivation and retention rates for employees
  • 86% of businesses say the Living Wage has improved the reputation of their business
  • 93% of businesses say the Living Wage has benefited their business

Improved productivity and staff retention - resulting from a fairer wage, could more than cancel out the increase in wages.
